Statement of Primary Purpose

The Work-Based Learning Coordinator supports the development, implementation, and management of work-based learning programs for career and technical education students. This includes facilitating opportunities for students to explore, experience, and engage in work-based learning modalities such as cooperative education, pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing and field observations.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Coordinate student Exploration and understanding of the world of work associated with SCC's Career Technologies and Health Sciences programs:
• Serve as a resource to assist faculty and students in gaining knowledge about the nature and characteristics of occupations served by the College's applied science degree programs
• Assist students with identifying work-based job observations/shadowing opportunities
• Coordinate workplace visits and tours for faculty and students
• Engage employers, professionals, and retirees as guest presenters in classes and seminars
• Promote work-based learning programs to recruit student and employer participation
• Assist with program advisory committees, career day, and job fair events
• Refer students to Career Services office as needed for individual career exploration and planning
• Coordinate Experiences to support student appreciation and development of fundamental job and employability skills:
• Compile and maintain learning resources to support the development of student employability skills such as teamwork, communication, workplace behaviors
• Develop activities, tutorials and presentations to promote the development of student employability skills in applied science programs
• Collaborate with Human Resources Development staff to connect qualifying students with HRD services
• Assist faculty, staff, and student organizations in the identification of project-based learning, community service, and volunteer activities
• Coordinate Student Engagement in Work-Based Learning experiences to directly apply classroom and lab skills:
• Assist with student placement in work-based learning (WBL) assignments
• Provide student orientations to WBL/cooperative education courses
• Collaborate with faculty, employers and students to create appropriate learning outcomes for specific WBL assignments
• Serve as instructor of record for WBL/cooperative education courses
• Conduct site visits with students and employers during WBL assignments
• Facilitate the assessment of student learning outcomes during WBL experiences
• Maintain detailed, accurate records of WBL/cooperative education experiences as required for academic credit and college reporting
• Create and maintain a database of potential WBL sites and positions

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in counseling, business, education or related field. (Master's preferred)

Knowledge and Skills
Strong organizational and planning skills required, with attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
Effective interpersonal skills for establishing a productive rapport with employers, instructors, and students
Excellent written and oral communications skills required

Knowledge of employability skills and local job market preferred
College teaching or student service experience preferred.

Physical Demands
Ability to navigate a variety of work environments including industrial and outdoor/recreational settings.

Licensing Requirement
None

Working Conditions and Environment
Frequent daily travel may be required to meet with employers and monitor students during work-based learning assignments in western North Carolina. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

Equipment Operation
PC, standard office equipment. Valid Driver's License for college vehicle operation.
